Ouzounoff, Alexandre (*1955)

Composer’s note
I have already composed many pieces with Percussions and it’s always an interesting but delicate path to follow. You are inevitably attracted by one of the three major colors Africa, India or Caribbean.
In a previous piece “Nairobi la nuit” I’ve already explored African influences and practiced Indian music as Bassoonist, improvising with Indian musicians in the Island of La Réunion and Madagascar. I turned myself towards Caribbean music and more particularly Brazilian one.
Pixação is the name given to graffiti in the Brazilian cities of Sao Paulo and Rio. On walls and vacant buildings, the painters compete to paint in high and inaccessible places.
It inspired me a piece for the final exam of a student of mine. In my mind this piece was a kind of competition for him, a higher level to reach.
In this piece the bassoon is frequently used as percussion and sometimes the percussion is used as a singer. Like those painters who become climbers, a substitution of roles.
To figure the heights where the Pixação are painted, I’ve used the high register of Bassoon contrasting with the extreme low of Marimba.
Of course, you will also find some rhythmical figures issued from Brazilian folklore, the Bossa.
The piece is in one movement. Duration: 8 min.30’’
