Archery, wrestling and horse racing are the three sports featured at Oulan-Bator during the
festival that celebrates Mongolian independence: NAADAM. These events are held every
year at the beginning of July and for a few years a fourth sport has been proposed: shagai, a
fortune telling game using the bones of sheep or goats as dice. I used these games as a kind of
structure for the composition of this sextet while assigning shagai the role of transitioning
among the three parts that are played without pause.
Archery
After a short introduction in modal style and with a meditative character in a slow tempo, the
first part is inspired by the sport of archery. The first phrase is ascending, and this entire
section is based on the movement of an arrow rising into the sky. I did not depict the fall of
the arrow! The first transition rests essentially with the wind instruments, the piano only
playing at the end of the section. They are used for their percussive character with very short
attacks, and are often used in a homorhythmic fashion. Finally a newly slow section shared by
the horn and bassoon ends this first transition.
This second section is fairly short like the fight itself and is comprised of three characters: the
piano, the horn and the three winds. It is based on a very vertical style of writing. The second
and final transition is a kind of synthesis of the wrestling and the horse races to come.
Horse racing
The work ends with the racehorse whose image continues to resonate in our memory and
whose prowess is only realized because the rider believes in him! The tempo, which is quite
fast at first and features short rhythmic values that are distributed among the six instruments
to represent bursting jets, increases progressively as the note values get even shorter. More
and more the wind instrument phrases resemble overlapping vaults atop long, legato rising
movements, interrupted by the piano (chords; rapid sweeping scales; discontinuous
discourse). The last pages are almost like a coda in which all the elements of the work are
replayed, suggesting an apotheosis.
The work lasts 8’ 50’’ and is dedicated to Jeffrey Lyman

pour des concerts de musique de chambre et multiplie les enregistrements : Poulenc ; Villa Lobos ; Ozi ; Caplet ;
Magnard.
